Black Screen

A completely black, blank screen. Go full screen to make your display dark without turning it off.

Ways to use a black screen

Dark second monitor

Black out a second display during a film, a game or at night without unplugging it or changing any settings.

OLED and AMOLED displays

On OLED panels, black pixels are switched off. A black screen uses very little power and gives off almost no light.

Backlight bleed test

In a dark room, a full black screen shows light leaking from the edges of an LCD panel and any pixels stuck on a bright color.

Hide your screen

Step away from your desk without leaving open windows, messages and notifications on display.

Cleaning glossy screens

Smudges and lint reflect light against a black background, so they are easy to spot.

Dark room for films and sleep

A black screen keeps a TV or monitor on without lighting up the room, which helps when the device has to stay on for audio or a download.

Backdrop for close-up photos

Place a phone or tablet showing the black screen behind small objects for a clean, dark backdrop in close-up photos.

Presentations and stages

Put the projector on a plain black image between slides or before a talk starts, so the audience sees nothing until you are ready.

Pitch black, not dark gray

The screen is #000000 on every pixel, the darkest color your display can show. There is nothing on it except black.

Black screen for OLED displays

OLED and AMOLED panels light each pixel on its own. A black pixel stays off, so a black screen draws very little power and gives off no glow. That makes this page useful on OLED phones, laptops and TVs when you want the panel dark but the device awake. LCD screens work differently: one backlight sits behind the whole panel, so black looks dark gray in a dark room and the power saving is small.

Test a monitor for backlight bleed and glow

Wait until the room is dark, open the black screen in full screen and set your monitor to the brightness you normally use. Look at the edges and corners. Bright patches near the frame are backlight bleed. A faint glow that changes as you move your head is usually IPS glow, which is normal for that panel type. If you need to show a problem to the seller, take a photo with your phone's exposure turned down.

Darken a second monitor without switching it off

Switching a monitor off can cause your computer to rearrange windows or change the display layout. A black screen in full screen on that monitor avoids this. Open the page in a separate browser window, drag it to the second display and press F. When you come back, your windows are still where you left them.

Keep a screen awake while the room stays dark

Some jobs need a device to stay on, such as a long download, a backup or music playing through a TV. A black screen keeps the display active without lighting up the room. While full screen is active, the page asks the device not to sleep, in browsers that support it.

A black screen on a TV or projector

Connect a laptop to a TV or projector and open the black screen to show an empty picture between presentations, videos or games. On a projector, a black image still lets a little light through, so the wall looks dark gray rather than fully black.

Keyboard shortcuts

Press F to switch full screen on or off and Esc to leave it. The mouse cursor hides after a few seconds without movement, so the screen stays completely black.

How to use it

Press Full screen, click the colored area or press F on your keyboard. Adjust the brightness slider if the screen is too bright. Press Esc, or tap Exit on a phone, to return to the page.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black screen save battery?

On OLED and AMOLED displays, yes. Black pixels use almost no power. LCD panels keep their backlight lit whatever they show, so you save very little.

Can a black screen prevent burn-in?

Showing black instead of a fixed image gives OLED pixels a rest and can lower the risk of image retention. It does not repair burn-in that already exists.

Will my computer go to sleep?

While full screen is active, the page asks your device to keep the display on, if your browser supports it. Close the tab if you want the display to sleep normally.

Is the screen really #000000?

Yes. Every pixel is set to pure black. How dark it looks depends on your display. OLED panels show true black, while LCD panels show a very dark gray because of the backlight.

Does the black screen work on my phone?

Yes. It works in the browser on iPhone, iPad and Android. On iPhone the black screen fills the browser window, because Safari cannot hide its toolbars for web pages.

Can it find dead pixels?

Yes. A pixel that stays lit on the black screen is a stuck pixel. Dead pixels stay dark, so check for those on the white screen. Checking both covers the most common faults.

Is it free? Do I need to install anything?

Yes, it is free. Every screen runs in your web browser on a computer, phone or tablet. There is nothing to download and no account to create.

Do you store or upload anything?

No. Your settings are saved only in your own browser so they are ready next time. We do not use cookies, and we count visits with cookieless analytics.
